WFSH “61” Reunion Update:

While planning our 50th Reunion, the committee requested donations to be applied toward a gift for the school in our name. The generosity of our classmates was overwhelming. We also had money left over from the 50th class reunion account. Working with the school, the committee decided to replace the antiquated sound system in the field house. Herby Carr coordinated the purchase of the system through Dan White, who installed the system, and the school. Paying for the system through the foundation saved us money on taxes. The final cost of the system was just over $5,900. We had money left over! Approximately $1,400 was earmarked for seed monies for our next ‘get-together’ and the remaining funds established the Wichita Falls Senior High School Class of 1961 Scholarship Fund.

Much thought was put into establishing this scholarship fund. Hopes are the scholarship will be a continuing legacy to the WFHS graduates. Again working with the school and Cheryl Pappan, Executive Director, WFISD Foundation, many eligibility criteria were considered. Janie Lindsey Grimes, Herby Carr, Terry Anderson Gilleland and Susan Cox Wainscott identified what was believed to be important with Janie being instrumental in creating our final application form. They wanted the scholarship to be applied to either an academic or vocational school along with the candidate to be a first generation college student. Other criteria thought to be important were family income of $30,000 or less per year, a grade point average of at least 2.5 and two letters of recommendation. The final criterion is a concise essay detailing personal strengths and academic achievements through curricula and/or after school activities, personal goals and his or her commitment to completing their education. The annual award was set at $750, for the time being, with candidates being considered now. The first scholarship will be awarded in May, 2012 with the recipient entering school this coming fall.

We hope the class will continue to support the scholarship fund. Initial input into the account will finance 2012 and 2013. Only through the continued generosity of our classmates, will additional scholarships be awarded for years to come. Please contact Susan Wainscott or Janie Grimes should you wish to contribute to the WFSH Class of 1961 Scholarship Fund. If you prefer, your contribution can be mailed directly to or you may contact Cheryl personally.
